The Dorothy A. Johnson Center for Philanthropy and Nonprofit Leadership at Grand Valley State University in partnership with the Lodestar Center for Philanthropy and Nonprofit Innovation at Arizona State University and The Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University hosted Nonprofit 2020: Issues and Answers from the Next Generation (NP2020). NP2020 convened in July 2007 and provided an opportunity for emerging leaders to raise their voice on the issue of the leadership deficit in the nonprofit sector and to discuss the future of leadership for the nonprofit sector.

The design of the conference was simple and open. Given the talent present, the design was intended less to tell participants what to do, but instead to provide a supportive environment in which they could openly dialog about their concerns and possible solutions. The conference was facilitated through use of an Open Space Technology. Open Space Technology is just what it implies – a safe time and space for people to pursue the business at hand.

The outcome from the conference is already becoming visible. Discussions by emerging leaders have become evident, as they explore ways to keep other emerging leaders in the sector and look for mentors. Emerging leaders left the conference feeling energized and together we can put into action a plan for keeping the nonprofit sector thriving.
